DESCRIPTION: Residence Hall Innerspring Mattress, especially designed for resistance to fire, and for ultimate comfort, firm support, cleanability, and long-term service. Finished sizes as specified with not less than 200 coils minimum. (36 x 80 x 7 is our standard size, 36 x 75 x 7 is used in some areas, and occasionally 36 x 90 x 7 are used). All mattresses must meet or exceed these requirements. 2. INNERSPRING: VM-96H Type III, knotted coil Bonnel, the coils shall be 13 gauge hard drawn steel, the type known as upholstery spring wire, knotting and coiling quality. Coils shall be in the hour glass shape not less than five (5) turns or convolutions per coil and knotted both top and bottom. Coils shall be assembled in rows connected with 17gauge helical wire on both surfaces by helical wire on both surfaces. Coils shall be five (5) inches in height, plus or minus one-quarter inch. The spring assembly shall be tempered. 3. GARNETTED RAG INSULATOR PAD, 3 oz. minimum, shall cover both surfaces of the spring assembly and overlap 4 inches on length and width, stretch, tied and attached to innerspring unit. The pad must be fire resistant and prevent cotton insulator from pocketing into the innerspring coils. 4. FIRE RETARDANT COTTON BATTING BORIC ACID treated five pounds to a side. 5. CUSHIONING FOAM: The cotton pad shall be covered with a one-half inch pad of low smoke foam with scrim. The cotton pad and foam pad shall be three inches larger than the innerspring unit in length and width. 6. CORNERS: Corners shall be filled and rounded with fire retardant. COVERING: Cover shall be heavy SOFlux OX, suited for industrial use. The cover shall be fabricated in smooth top construction with top and bottom panels made of one piece of material without seams. The covering shall have a flange sewn to it to prevent cover from rotating on mattress. The flange is hog ringed to every other coil along the perimeter of the innerspring unit top and bottom. The fabric must be antimicrobial, bacteria resistant, antifungal, flame and hydrostatic resistant. The outside mattress cover shall be sewn with internal seams and a zippered closure or sewn closure. The zipper closure shall have a center line flap that completely covers the zipper. FLAME RESISTANCE: Mattress shall conform to all requirements of federal, municipal, and state flammability standards. Including CFR part 1633 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Mattresses must meet or exceed California Technical Bulletin 129, and should meet or exceed Boston Fire Department Code 1X-11. (Proof of compliance should be submitted with your response). LABELS: Labels shall be in accordance with DOC-FF-4-72. An identification label showing percentages each material used manufacturer's name and date of manufacturer shall be securely attached to the border end of each mattress. PACKAGING: Mattresses shall be clean and free of all defects. Mattresses shall be completely covered in a 2mil or thicker plastic bag and the ends of the bag shall be sealed. The bag shall not have any holes. SIZE IDENTIFICATION: Mattresses will be easily identifiable by size even when wrapped in plastic (shrink wrapped or otherwise). The label or identification method will indicate the length and width of each mattress contained within the packaging materials. INSPECTION: One percent of the mattresses may be selected at random from each shipment for inspection of individual components and quality. At minimum, supplier will provide at least one mattress at no charge should University make such request. This mattress will be used to evaluate compliance to specifications, overall quality and conformity to fire resistance requirements. SAMPLE MATTRESS: University may request a sample mattress for evaluation by Universitys staff. Sample mattresses shall be sent at no charge to the University. Furthermore, the sample mattresses may be cut, torn, burned or subjected to rigorous testing by University staff to determine quality, durability, and flammability of product. In the instance that contractor requires the sample mattress to be returned after evaluation; the Contractor shall make arrangements for mattress pickup and shall be solely responsible for all associated costs. MINIMUM REQUIREMENT STATEMENT: The above specifications are our minimum requirements. Suppliers may quote products that meet or exceed these minimum specifications (equal or better product). University shall have final say regarding acceptability and conformity to specifications. Detailed specifications for each product submitted should be included with your quote. University, at is sole discretion, shall determine if a product meets or exceeds stated minimum requirements. PREFERENCES: University prefers a mattress without external seams and preference may be given to suppliers able to demonstrate their ability to provide a mattress with inverted seams and enclosed by a flange covered zipper or sealed seam process on one end. University values the ability of suppliers to compress roll and shrink-wrap mattresses for ease of handling and greatly reduced storage space consumption. Preference may be given to suppliers that are able to demonstrate their ability to conform to this preference.
